4 Future Car Technologies which Truly have a Chance!
Technology is one of the greatest stimulators of change in the modern world. As far as the automotive industry is concerned, it is continuously bringing in new technologies. I was going through some of the latest car innovations and saw some exciting technologies which can transform not just the industry but transportation in general.
So what is in store for cars of the future? Well, I don’t know for sure but based on what is currently being tested and what’s on the road today, here are some ideas of new technology that will most likely make it into production. Some of it will help keep us safe, some will give us information like never before and some will let us enjoy the ride.

- Augmented reality dashboards: GPS and other in-car displays are great to get us from one point to another. Some high-end vehicles even have displays on the windshield, but in the near future cars can identify external objects in front of the driver and display information about them on the windshield. BMW has already executed a windshield display in their vehicles which display the basic information and are also developing AR dashboards which can identify objects in front of the vehicle and tell the driver how far they are from the object. For example, if you are coming towards a car, a red box may appear on it with arrows showing you how to maneuver into the next lane. An AR GPS system could highlight the actual lane you need to be in and show you where you need to turn down the road without you ever having to take your eyes off the road. Though AR is not here yet, I believe if these car companies have their way, we can see this feature in our future cars soon.
- Energy Storing Car Panels: With so many car manufacturers moving towards creating hybrid models, the next concept is to be able to charge these cars as easily as possible. The makers are looking into finding ways that the body of the car actually charges the battery within them. The first thought which came to my mind was a solar-powered car, but this seems to go more on the lines of maintaining the batteries energy and using it efficiently when the car isn’t turned on. With many manufacturers testing this in Europe, I expect some information on this in the near future.
- Cars that communicate with each other: Car manufacturers are researching a technology that can enable future cars to communicate with each other and with objects around them. There is a developing technology called Vehicle-to-Vehicle communication, or V2V, being tested by Ford as a way to help lower the number of road accidents. This technology uses wireless signals to send information back and forth between cars about their location, speed, and direction. The information is then communicated to the surrounding cars in order to provide information on how to keep the vehicles at a safe distance from each other. I think such technologies can transform the way we drive and increase automotive safety.
- Airbags that can stop the cars: Since the time airbags have been added to the vehicles, they have continued to make their way inside the vehicles. There are several kinds such as curtain airbags, side airbags, knee airbags, and seat belt airbags. Mercedes is experimenting with airbags that deploy from underneath the car and will help stop a vehicle before a crash. These bags have friction coating which helps slow the car down and double the stopping power of the vehicle. Although Mercedes has been working on this technology for several years, I think it will not be seen on the road for another few years.
